This project shows the use of Math Journals (both handwritten and word processed) to assess students' understanding of math concepts throughout the year. Students must use words to explain applicable math operations. As the teacher, this offers insight into students' thinking and offers guidance for future instruction.

I like the idea of writing words to show understanding of a concept. It also shows if there is a misunderstanding within the student's work.
ReplyDeleteI also like using writing in math class. This is a great way to strengthen writing skills.
Great way to incorporate literacy into the math curriculum. Good work :)

Wow! You tied writing in across the curriculum AND get a very good idea of the process individual students take in the development of their mathematical thinking. Really nice job!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! When students can verbalize and/or illustrate their understanding of concepts in math, it's easy to see that learning is taking place.
ReplyDeleteUsing a writing journal during math class really allows the students time to reflect on their learning. It also gives the teacher insight on the students' thinking, learning, and processing.
ReplyDeleteIt's always great to use writing in math. It really makes the students think and use all different parts of their brains.
ReplyDeleteI really like these and think it is great that you give the students time to reflect and explain it in their own words.
ReplyDeleteGreat way to help students assess their own learning as well as give you an understanding of what students actually comprehend!
ReplyDeleteThis is a terrific way to assess the students' true understanding of math concepts. The strategy of writing/reteaching your learning illustrates their grasp of the material. Not only can your students apply the steps, but they can explain them as well!!!
